Henna Brows: How To Pick The Right Color?

Beauty eyebrows brow henna dyotics brows wenkbrauwen ondertoon kleur

We are often asked: how do you choose the right color of Brow Henna? And how do the shades work on the skin? Unfortunately, there is no clear answer to this. How a color turns out for someone has to do with various factors:

Need to know about dyotics and supercilium henna brows eyebrows

1. The Amount Of Brow Hairs

The concept of brow henna is that you dye eyebrow hairs, but especially the skin. Ideal to fill in bald spots or make thin brows more visible. Still, there must be some hair to get a nice result. If a person has too less brow hairs, no more than a subtle stain will get onto the skin. If someone already has very full brows, the result can be quite intenste.

2. The Structure Of The Hairs

A porous eyebrow hair absorbs more dye than a fine hair. In this way blonde eyebrows can become very dark, even with the lightest color of brow henna. How do you recognize such an eyebrow? The hairs are often very light, without much pigment, and thick in structure. Women (and men) with porous brow hairs often have an oily skin. You have to be careful with these kinds of brows. Leave the henna for 5 minutes and check the result by removing the front part. It is possible that the hairs are already very dark, but haven't stain the skin properly. But still remove all henna in such a case, because your client definitely doesn't long for black brows.

3. Skintype

After inspecting the hairs of the customer, take a close look at her skin color. In case of a light skin you don't pick black, even if someone wants dark brows. On a darker skin, it makes no sense to choose for blond. You also pay attention to skin type. On a dry skin, henna stains well, so the result will be more intensive than when a print is minimal. This is the case with oily skins. Brow henna does not stain well on an oily skin, and it's even not recommended - to avoid disappointed looks.

Cool Undertone

Does a skin have a cool undertone? Then a color turns out more ashy than when someone has a warm undertone. Just like with permanent makeup. The undertone of a skin has nothing to do with the skin color (light, medium or dark), but refers to the amount of melanin or pigment in the skin.

Warm Undertone

With a warm undertone there is naturally quite a lot of melanin (pigment) in the skin. A skin with a warm undertone is often slightly tinted to dark, and people with such a skin often have green or brown eyes. With these skins a henna shade can quickly become too warm, so preferably use Natural Brown with a tip of Ash Brown, or use just Ash Brown or Raven.

How a henna color turns out has a lot to do with the fullness of the natural brow. In case of thinner brows, the result will always be lighter. Whatever color you choose.

In The Mix

Dyotics Brow Henna is available from blond to almost black. What are the characteristics of these colors? And what are fine color cocktails?

Honey: slightly warm blonde shade, for women (and men of course) with light eyebrows and light skin. On a skin with a warm undertone Honey will turn our warmer than on a cool skin. Mix Honey with Taupe for a beautiful, slightly darker blonde shade. But there are also brow stylists who make darker colors a little lighter and warmer. Ash Brown & Honey, for example, is the favorite mix of Chelise from The Secret Brow Club. Also beautiful: Honey and Natural Brown. For a warm brown, medium brown color.

Taupe: a fine blonde-brown tint, for blonde to dark blonde eyebrows on light to medium skin. Note: Taupe can sometimes differ, after all, it remains a natural product. In one of our last batches, Taupe was a little warmer than it used to be. Then use it for the ladies who love warm brown brows. Or add tip of Ash Brown to make the color more ashy.

Natural Brown: the name says it all. For eyebrows on light to medium skin tones. Natural Brown is the most popular color which fit everyone. This color is so perfect that mixing is actually unnecessary. Still want to make the color more intense and cooler? Natural Brown mixes perfectly with Ash Brown.

Ash Brown: a dark shade with an cool effect, for tinted to dark skin tones. Too light? Add a tip of Raven. Or make it a little lighter with Natural Brown.

Raven: an extra dark shade, especially for eyebrows on dark skin. You can lighten Raven slightly with any color. Yes, even with Honey. But with a pinch lighter, the effect will be minimal, because Raven dominates. Do 50/50 earlier if you really want Raven to be lighter.

What Are Your Wishes?

So there are quite a few things to take into account when choosing the right henna color. Does a customer have full brows or not? What is the structure of the hairs? And how is her skin color? But perhaps the most important thing is her wish. Is she coming for the first time and a bit scared? Or is she a fan of dark brows? Before you start, discuss expectations thoroughly, so there'll be no confusion.

Practice Makes Perfect

Example 1

Wish: Not too dark, natural.
Natural brows:
White, blond.
Skin:
Dry.
Structure of the hair:
Normal.
Brow Henna:
Honey.
Leave-inn time:
We removed the front part after 5 minutes. If you notice the hairs are already quite dark, remove the rest after another 5 minutes. The hairs will color quite quickly because they contain just a little piment. The dry skin ensures that the henna is absorbed quickly, for a serious print on the skin.

Example 2

Wish: A beautiful dark, more prominent brow.
Natural brows:
Black.
Skin:
Oily.
Undertone skin:
Yellow.
Hair structure:
Normal.
Brow Henna:
Ash Brown.
Leave-inn time:
We removed the front part after 5-10 minutes, for the ombre effect. And checked how the henna developed on the skin. Because in this case the hairs were allready black we went for a strong print and left the rest for another 15 minutes on the skin. Because of her oily skin and already dark hair you don't have to be afraid the color turns out too dark.
